There are many of them, often associated with an institution or a research area:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/hal.archives-ouvertes.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>HAL<\/u><\/a> : multidisciplinary<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>ArXiv<\/u><\/a>: mathematics, physics, computer science and quantitative biology<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>PubMed Central<\/u><\/a> : biomedical and life sciences<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/repec.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>RePEc<\/u><\/a>, Research Papers in Economics : economy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/peerj.com\/preprints\/?type=preprints\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>PeerJPreprints<\/u><\/a>: biology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>To find an open archive, there is the <a href=\"https:\/\/v2.sherpa.ac.uk\/opendoar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">OpenDOAR<\/a>, an international directory of open access platforms: digital libraries, open archives, scientific archives, etc. The advanced search allows you to search by type of document hosted, by country, by scientific discipline, by type of repository (institutional, disciplinary, aggregator, governmental, etc.).<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">HAL<\/h3>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hal.archives-ouvertes.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HAL<\/a> HAL is a multidisciplinary open archive developed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccsd.cnrs.fr\/le-ccsd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CCSD<\/a>, the Centre pour la Communication Scientifique Directe. Researchers can submit their own scientific articles with the agreement of their co-authors and in compliance with the publishers&#8217; policy.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Types of documents<\/h2>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The NISO has defined 7 stages in the life cycle of a manuscript:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Author\u2019s<\/strong><strong> Original<\/strong> = Author&#8217;s version <strong>=<\/strong> <strong>preprint<\/strong>: version of the article that can be submitted for peer review. The author assumes full responsibility<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Submitted<\/strong><strong>Manuscript<\/strong><strong> Under <\/strong><strong>Review<\/strong> = peer-reviewed version of the manuscript: the version of the article submitted for peer review, which follows the editor&#8217;s formatting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Accepted <\/strong><strong>Manuscript<\/strong> = accepted manuscript <strong>=<\/strong> <strong>postprint<\/strong>: version accepted by the journal. The editor is responsible for the content. The content and layout respect the codes of the magazine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Proof<\/strong> = version to be published: version of the article created during the publication process<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Version of Record<\/strong> <strong>= final published version: published version with journal formatting<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Corrected<\/strong><strong> Version of Record<\/strong> = corrected published version: final published version with errors corrected<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Enhanced Version of Record<\/strong> = final annotated version: updated version, with added information, notes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>The Coop-IST summarises this list in 3 main versions:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>preprint<\/strong>: the last version of the article before peer review<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>postprint<\/strong> :<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>final version published<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Laws of the French Digital Republic<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does the law say?<\/h3>\n\n<p>Article 30 of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legifrance.gouv.fr\/jorf\/id\/JORFTEXT000033202746\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Loi n\u00b02016-1321 du 7 octobre 2016 pour une R\u00e9publique num\u00e9rique<\/u><\/a> states:<\/p>\n\n<p>\u00ab Art. L. 533-4.-I.-Lorsqu&#8217;un \u00e9crit scientifique issu d&#8217;une activit\u00e9 de recherche financ\u00e9e au moins pour moiti\u00e9 par des dotations de l\u2019\u00c9tat, des collectivit\u00e9s territoriales ou des \u00e9tablissements publics, par des subventions d&#8217;agences de financement nationales ou par des fonds de l&#8217;Union europ\u00e9enne est publi\u00e9 dans un p\u00e9riodique paraissant au moins une fois par an, son auteur dispose, m\u00eame apr\u00e8s avoir accord\u00e9 des droits exclusifs \u00e0 un \u00e9diteur, du droit de mettre \u00e0 disposition gratuitement dans un format ouvert, par voie num\u00e9rique, sous r\u00e9serve de l&#8217;accord des \u00e9ventuels coauteurs, la version finale de son manuscrit accept\u00e9e pour publication, d\u00e8s lors que l&#8217;\u00e9diteur met lui-m\u00eame celle-ci gratuitement \u00e0 disposition par voie num\u00e9rique ou, \u00e0 d\u00e9faut, \u00e0 l&#8217;expiration d&#8217;un d\u00e9lai courant \u00e0 compter de la date de la premi\u00e8re publication. Ce d\u00e9lai est au maximum de six mois pour une publication dans le domaine des sciences, de la technique et de la m\u00e9decine et de douze mois dans celui des sciences humaines et sociales \u00bb.<\/p>\n\n<p>Thus, the following are concerned:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>research that is at least half publicly funded<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and whose results are published in a journal<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What the law allows us to do<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/v2.sherpa.ac.uk\/romeo\/\"><u>Sherpa\/Romeo<\/u><\/a> website lists the different positions of publishers with regard to deposit in open archives. For example, some publishers request an embargo period or require the submission of a specific version of the publication. It is therefore advisable to check the open access practices of your publisher before depositing your article on an open archive.<\/p>\n\n<p>The law for a Digital Republic facilitates the deposit in open archives. Indeed, this law allows authors to deposit the accepted version of their publication and limits embargoes to 6 or 12 months depending on the discipline.<\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Recommendations<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n<p>The CNRS Legal Affairs Department offers<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dgdr.cnrs.fr\/daj\/Archive%202017\/propriete\/droits\/droits7.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Recommandations pour un d\u00e9p\u00f4t r\u00e9gulier d\u2019une publication en archives ouvertes<\/u><\/a> :<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1. <strong>Check that the document is not confidential<\/strong> (patentable result, secret know-how, etc.). If it is, it should not be filed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2. <strong>Make sure that your co-authors and other contributors (photographers, illustrators, other authors&#8230;) agree to the deposit<\/strong> in the archive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3 . <strong>If your document has not been entrusted to a publisher or distributor<\/strong>: you are free to deposit it, but if you plan to publish it in the future, remember to inform your publisher of the deposit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>4. <strong>If your document has been entrusted to a publisher or distributor<\/strong> :\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>If no written contract of assignment of rights has been concluded<\/em>, You are free to file it after the first publication. Nevertheless, in the context of a fair relationship, inform your publisher.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>If the contract concluded does not provide for the exclusive transfer of rights for all media or for electronic media<\/em>, You are free to file it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>If the contract has provided for the possibility of making the document openly accessible after a certain period of time<\/em>, you are free to file it after the period.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Si le contrat a pr\u00e9vu la cession de vos droits \u00e0 titre exclusif pour tout support, ou pour le seul support \u00e9lectronique, pour la dur\u00e9e de la protection l\u00e9gale :<\/em> contactez votre \u00e9diteur pour obtenir son autorisation \u00e9crite pour le d\u00e9p\u00f4t, en vous appuyant sur sa politique actuelle en mati\u00e8re de libre acc\u00e8s diffus\u00e9e sur son site, ou sur les sites d\u00e9di\u00e9s \u00e0 ces questions : <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sherpa.ac.uk\/romeo.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>http:\/\/www.sherpa.ac.uk\/romeo.php<\/u><\/a> pour les \u00e9diteurs, <a href=\"http:\/\/romeo.eprints.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>http:\/\/romeo.eprints.org<\/u><\/a> pour les journaux. \u00bb<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Be careful, therefore, to <strong>keep your contracts<\/strong> with publishers: all the information relating to dissemination on the open archives is indicated (transfer of rights, distribution, etc.).<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The case of<\/strong> <strong>preprints<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>The preprint has not been edited and remains the property of its author. In theory, every researcher has the right to deposit his or her preprints on an open archive.<\/p>\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ouvrirlascience.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/180221_Guide-d%E2%80%99application-de-la-loi-article30-version-courte.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u><em>Guide d\u2019application de la loi pour une R\u00e9publique num\u00e9rique (article 30) \u00c9crits scientifiques (version courte)<\/em><\/u><\/a> states that the deposit of scientific writing on a platform is always possible at any stage of its writing by the author. Thus, the preprint is a priori exempt from publisher&#8217;s authorisation.<\/p>\n\n<p>However, the Rennes 1 <a href=\"https:\/\/openaccess.univ-rennes1.fr\/le-cas-des-pre-prints\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Open Access<\/u><\/a> website points out that in reality, authors are often forced to assign their rights as soon as the contract is signed, upstream of the proofreading and publishing process. However, <strong>most publishers allow pre-prints to be distributed<\/strong> under certain conditions.<\/p>\n\n<p>It is therefore advisable to check on <a href=\"https:\/\/v2.sherpa.ac.uk\/romeo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Sherpa\/Romeo<\/u><\/a> which document can be disseminated on the open archives.
