{"id":3911,"date":"2023-01-19T15:51:02","date_gmt":"2023-01-19T14:51:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.centre-mersenne.org\/international-mathematical-union-best-current-practices-for-journals\/"},"modified":"2023-05-31T16:04:26","modified_gmt":"2023-05-31T14:04:26","slug":"international-mathematical-union-best-current-practices-for-journals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.centre-mersenne.org\/en\/international-mathematical-union-best-current-practices-for-journals\/","title":{"rendered":"International Mathematical Union : Best Current Practices for Journals"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On 16 August 2010, the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mathunion.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">International Mathematical Union<\/a> adopted the text <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mathunion.org\/fileadmin\/CEIC\/bestpractice\/bpfinal.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Best Current Practices for Journals<\/a><\/em>, which summarises the <strong>rights and duties of the different actors in scientific publishing<\/strong>, from the author to the publisher.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Rights and responsibilities<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td>\u00a0<\/td><td><strong>Rights<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Responsibilities<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Authors<\/strong><\/td><td>&#8211; Careful and impartial peer review<br\/>&#8211; Know the selection process<br\/>&#8211; Know the reasons why an item is accepted or rejected <\/td><td>&#8211; Maintain high standards of integrity and seriousness in their research<br\/>&#8211; Clear and correct language level<br\/>&#8211; The manuscript should not be sent to several journals at the same time<br\/>&#8211; Respond to correspondence from the newspaper by designating a spokesperson for all authors of an article<br\/>&#8211; All authors must have participated in the publication<br\/>&#8211; It is customary in mathematics to list authors in alphabetical order<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Reviewers<\/strong><\/td><td>&#8211; Right to anonymity <\/td><td>&#8211; Keeping to the timetable<br\/>&#8211; Respect for confidentiality<br\/>&#8211; Do not use research from revised manuscripts for your own purposes<br\/>&#8211; Inform authors fully about the acceptance or rejection of a manuscript<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Editorial committee<\/strong> <\/td><td>\u00a0<\/td><td>&#8211; Propose a clear submission and review procedure, including the roles of editors and reviewers, that is publicly accessible<br\/>&#8211; Ensuring the integrity of the proofreading process<br\/>&#8211; If an article is rejected before it is sent to the reviewers, this must be done in a fair and objective manner<br\/>&#8211; Inform authors of the reasons for acceptance or rejection of their paper and provide access to all evaluation reports<br\/>&#8211; Be prepared to apply sanctions in case of unethical practices<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Publishers<\/strong><\/td><td>\u00a0<\/td><td>&#8211; Respect the principles of integrity, transparency and timeliness<br\/>&#8211; Publish detailed information on the journal and evaluation procedures<br\/>&#8211; Ensuring access to and referencing of publications<br\/>&#8211; Flexibility in payment<br\/>&#8211; Distinguish and isolate the evaluation process and editorial decisions from monetary considerations<br\/>&#8211; Layout and publication online or in print<br\/>&#8211; Clearly present their copyright policy<br\/>&#8211; Indicate the date of publication of the articles<br\/>&#8211; Respond to and investigate allegations of plagiarism or other unethical behaviour <\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Recommendations<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The editorial board needs to question the vision of the journal and its processes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To ensure a professional manuscript management system throughout the submission, review and publication process. Clear procedures should be established to avoid errors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To propose tools to detect and deal with plagiarism in submitted articles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The editor and the editorial board determine the quality standards, including the quality of the language.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Members of the editorial board should be actively involved in the editorial process of the journal.
